Random encounter tables are an essential tool for any Game Master (GM) running a fantasy tabletop RPG. They provide a quick and easy way to add variety and excitement to your adventures, and can help you to keep your players on their toes.

There are many different types of random encounter tables available, each with its own unique flavor. Some tables are designed for specific settings, such as forests, dungeons, or deserts. Others are more general, and can be used in any type of campaign.

No matter which type of table you choose, it's important to use them wisely. Random encounters should be used to enhance the story, not to derail it. They should also be challenging, but not insurmountable.

How to Use Random Encounter Tables

Using random encounter tables is simple. Just roll a die to determine the type of encounter you'll have, and then consult the table to see what you encounter.

For example, if you roll a 1 on a d6, you might encounter a group of goblins. If you roll a 6, you might encounter a dragon.

The type of encounter you roll will depend on the setting of your campaign and the level of your players. For example, a low-level party is more likely to encounter goblins than a dragon.

Tips for Creating Your Own Random Encounter Tables

If you want to create your own random encounter tables, there are a few things you'll need to keep in mind.

First, decide what type of encounters you want to include. Do you want to focus on combat encounters, or do you want to include a mix of combat and non-combat encounters?

Once you've decided what type of encounters you want to include, you'll need to come up with a list of potential encounters. For combat encounters, you'll need to include the following information:

  • The type of creature you'll encounter
  • The number of creatures you'll encounter
  • The level of the creatures
  • The treasure the creatures have

For non-combat encounters, you'll need to include the following information:

  • The type of encounter you'll have
  • The location of the encounter
  • The NPC you'll encounter
  • The quest or information the NPC has

Once you've come up with a list of potential encounters, you'll need to assign each encounter a die roll. For example, you might assign goblins a die roll of 1, and dragons a die roll of 6.

You can also use dice to determine the number of creatures you encounter. For example, you might roll a d6 to determine the number of goblins you encounter.

Random encounter tables are a valuable tool for any GM running a fantasy tabletop RPG. They can provide a quick and easy way to add variety and excitement to your adventures, and can help you to keep your players on their toes.

Whether you use pre-made random encounter tables or create your own, be sure to use them wisely. Random encounters should be used to enhance the story, not to derail it. They should also be challenging, but not insurmountable.
